Hazel and the volunteers have been really busy in the garden, but we managed to catch up with Hazel over a brew to find out what we should be doing in our gardens this November!
“Everything in the garden is dependant on the seasons. This year we’ve had a warm autumn, and still have lots of things flowering, so removing annuals and cutting back perennials can be put off until we get a cold spell, and they start firing back naturally.
It’s also a good idea to leave seed heads for the wildlife and these can often look lovely when the frost inevitably arrives.
November is the perfect time to have a good weed around the borders and then spread some manure or compost round your plants. This gives worms plenty of time to incorporate it for you over the winter.
We do have our own compost at Ford Park, which is available for a small donation. Please remember to bring your own bag to take compost home in.
Removing leaves from the lawn as they fall ensures the grass continues to get the light that it needs and keeping it nice and green.
November is the perfect time to plant those spring bulbs and it’s worth marking where you’ve planted clumps so that you don’t dig them up again. Old lolly sticks are good to use as markers.
You could also start to dig up and divide your perennials to create more of those you love.”
Thank you to Hazel for these top tips, we can't wait to see what she has planned for December.
