Last week we welcomed children from Church Walk Pre-School Nursery to the park to help us create a new community herb garden.
As part of The Great Big Green Week which ran from 8th June to the 16th June, we were granted funding from CAfS to create a community herb garden within the community orchard and to hold a Let's Swap for Good event in the Williams Room.
The children were invited to explore the orchard and identify the trees and vines already growing and walk through the long grasses towards the new herb garden.
Hazel talked to the children about the benefits of herbs and encouraged them to touch, taste and smell them before getting their hands dirty planting marjoram, chives, thyme, sage, lemon balm, chamomile, borage and a curry plant.
Once the plants are established, you’ll be able to wonder through and snip off a few herbs for tea.
The children also planted sunflowers in the orchard and are looking forward to coming back to see how big they grow.
A big thank you to the children, for all their hard work and to Lorna and Emma from the pre-school for brining the children along. Hazel will be visiting the nursery in a couple of weeks to help them weed and plant their pots in the playground.
We held our Let's Swap event on Saturday 15th June in the Williams Room where lots of families had donated unwanted items in exchange for tokens to come and exchange for the things they wanted and needed.
This is a great way of supporting local families during the cost of living crisis and reusing items rather than them ending up in landfill. Thank you to everyone who donated and to those who came along and found some treasures to take home.
Look out for details of a similar event in November...
